Smiths Falls mourns passing of former councillor Joseph Gallipeau

Former Smiths Falls councillor Joe Gallipeau passed away on Oct. 11.

The community of Smiths Falls is mourning the loss of one of their most dedicated sons, former Town Councillor Joseph “Joe” Gallipeau.

Gallipeau passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday, Oct. 11, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering loyalty and deep commitment to the town he called home.

A true hometown hero, Joe Gallipeau was a native of Smiths Falls, where he was not only born and raised but also became an integral part of the town’s fabric. He served as a town councillor during the 2014-2018 term, but his contributions to the community were not confined to the political sphere; he was also a thriving entrepreneur and the proud owner of J.A. Gallipeau Construction. Through his construction business, Gallipeau became a cornerstone in the community, leaving an indelible mark through the construction of hundreds of homes in Smiths Falls and its neighbouring areas.

In a statement, Mayor Shawn Pankow said, “The Town of Smiths Falls mourns the loss of a great community pillar. Joe Gallipeau’s dedication to serving and continuously investing in the growth of our town was admirable. His work has left an incredible mark in our town and his legacy will carry on through the hundreds of homes that we now enjoy in Smiths Falls.”

Gallipeau is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Gallipeau, his daughter Tracy Gallipeau-Nolan and son Todd Gallipeau, as well as by his many friends, and the extended family members.

In honour of the late former councillor, flags at all Town of Smiths Falls sites have been lowered to half-mast and will remain so until his graveside service.

Funeral arrangements and further details can be found in Joseph Gallipeau’s obituary.
