Whether or not you’re a lover of all things spooky and scary, almost everyone can agree on their love for good coffee, right?

Deadly Grounds Cafe in Carleton Place promises not only good coffee, but “coffee to die for!” The cafe is self-described as a “horror-themed cafe and retail experience” where you can enjoy a coffee, tea or skull-shaped croissant like you never have before.

The unique cafe had their soft launch on July 10 and 11, officially opening their doors to the public on July 12, 2023.

Michael Sulyha co-owns the cafe along with his wife, Catherine. He describes the atmosphere of the cafe as “creepy cozy,” stating “there is a lot for people to see each time they visit and they will feel comfortable enough to stay and enjoy their drinks and treats.” Sulyha explained that his favourite part about working in the cafe is “the interaction with all of the customers, getting to know them better, and helping make their visit a positive experience.”

Their menu features some eerie titles for their specialty lattes that are perfect for the Halloween season, including  “Myers Macchiato” and “Peanut Blooder.” Some of their specialty tea offerings are the “White Chapel,” “Amityville Horror,” and “Creature of the Blue Lagoon.”

When speaking with the Lanarkist, Michael said “even though a lot of our scary decor may be well suited to the Halloween season, we anticipate November and December to be busier months heading into the Christmas holidays.”

Deadly Grounds hosts a number of different vendors and artists inside the cafe, showcasing various art pieces for sale on the cafe walls, as well as vendors selling mugs, bath bombs, jewelry, dog treats, tarot cards and more. The cafe makes for a one of a kind Christmas shopping spot to grab presents for your mystery – loving friends.

Sulyha shared that the cafe is hosting multiple community-oriented events leading up to Halloween including the Pets Howl-O-Ween Costume Party on Oct. 22 at 4 p.m. and Spooky Stories on Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. Locals can also attend A Not-So-Spooky Storytime on Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. and Trick or Treating at the Cafe on Halloween from 6 – 8 p.m. If there was ever a fitting time to visit your local “spooktacular” cafe, the run up to Halloween would be it.

One of the new Deadly Grounds Cafe locations is at 1 Costello Drive Unit #5 in Carleton Place, Ontario. The cafe hours are Tuesday – Friday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday – Sunday from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
