Smiths Falls evens the score in Rockland in home-and-home series

It wasn’t until the third period on Saturday night on the road that the Smiths Falls Jr. A Bears were able to get back in the win column.

After splitting the weekend home-and-home series against the Nationals, the Bears are sitting tied in second place of the CCHL with 57 points, alongside the Cornwall Colts. Smiths Falls has a record of 27 wins, 13 losses, one overtime loss and two shootout losses.

The league-leading Navan Grads have 64 points with a record of 30-8-2-2. There are about a dozen games left in regular league play.


Saturday’s match-up in Rockland was the second meeting of these two teams in as many nights, as Rockland was in Smiths Falls Friday, Feb. 9 and handed the home team a 1-0 loss.

Retaliation came late in the game Saturday but it was Smiths Falls who drew first blood.

It was Cameron O’Connell with his first goal as a Bear at the 7:10 mark, assisted by Matthew Dimaline and Finnegan Kilmurray.

Into the second that lead held up until Kyle Leonard scored for Rockland at 7:21, assisted by Samuel Dumont and Mathis Bedard.

With just 5:36 gone into the third period, the Bears scored what would be the winner when Tyson Parker flipped in his 10th of the season. Quinn Booth and Jackson Heron had assists on the play.

Insurance came with Travis Ouellette’s goal, assisted by Dimaline and Owen Watson at 8:47, then it was Shaymus Stevenson with his 22nd of the season at 13:13. He was helped out by Parker and Julien Wasmer for the 4-1 final.

Dawson Labre picked up the win in nets for Smiths Falls with 22 saves.

Parker earned the game’s first star honours with his goal and assist, while Dimaline had the second star with two helpers. Rockland’s goalie, Sebastian Resar was the third star of the game with 27 saves.

It was a 1-0 loss at home for Smiths Falls on Friday in front of 309 fans, with the teams battling it out through two scoreless periods. It wasn’t until 13:52 of the third period that Rockland’s Anthony Hall could get past Labre with the one and only goal needed for the win.

Game stars were Rockland’s goalie, Benoit Forget (first) with 23 saves, and Hall (third) with his single marker.

Labre was the second star of the game making 16 saves for Smiths Falls.

There were three minor infractions in this one — Smiths Falls had just one of them.

Smiths Falls has won only two games against Rockland this season in the five games played. Both teams have won seven of their last 10 games.

The Bears are hosting the Ottawa Jr. Sens on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will be in Ottawa at the Jim Durrell Sports Complex (Arena 1) on Family Day, Feb. 19, for a 12:30 p.m. game.
