Lanark County to kick off maple syrup season with ‘Tapping Out Party’ at Westport sugar bush

Maple syrup season is set to officially begin a little early this year in Lanark County, with a ‘Tapping Out Party’ and ceremonial first tapping at Blair Brothers Maples in Westport this weekend.

The Tapping Out Party is an annual event that marks the beginning of the local season. It started in 1991, with the aim of showcasing the local maple industry; various members of Lanark and District Maple Syrup Producers Association LDMSPA host the party in rotation each year.

“In Ontario, maple syrup is recognized as the first agricultural crop of the season, and local production is currently in full swing,” LDMSPA president Leann Thompson told Lanarkist.

Thompson explained that “The current temperature fluctuations, rising above freezing during the day and dropping below at night, create ideal conditions for maple syrup. Although we are starting earlier than usual due to the warmer weather, we anticipate a successful season ahead.”

Everyone is invited to the Tapping Out Party, which will take place at Blair Brothers (9277 County Rd 42, Westport), on Saturday, March 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The party will feature the ceremonial first tapping at 11:30 a.m., as well as live music, baked goods, lunch items and sweet maple treats.
