A 55-year-old man has been arrested by Smiths Falls police on charges of hate-motivated mischief and assault.

In a media release, the Smiths Falls Police Service reports that on May 16, police received a complaint that a Town of Smiths Falls employee had been assaulted while revitalizing the pride flag cross walk on Beckwith Street.

The release says that during the investigation, it was learned that the employee was approached by a male suspect who proceeded to spit on them while making homophobic comments.
