Severe thunderstorm watch issued for much of Eastern Ontario, including Quinte, Lanark, Leeds and Grenville

Environment Canada warns that conditions are favourable for the development of “dangerous thunderstorms” that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain during the afternoon of Tuesday, July 16.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for much of Eastern Ontario, including the Quinte Region, Lanark County and Leeds and Grenville.
The weather alert states that wind gusts up to 90 km/h, and local rainfall amounts up to 75 mm possible are possible. Nickel-sized hail is also a potential hazard, which can damage property and cause injury. However, Environment Canada says that the primary threat is heavy rain. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water. Rainfall warnings may be issued should thunderstorms become nearly stationary over the area.
Strong wind gusts also have the potential to toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” Environment Canada states. “Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”
Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
