Shortage of abattoirs, meat processing plants in Mississippi Mills to be addressed at upcoming meeting

What is the future of meat processing for Mississippi Mills? A meeting is scheduled for next month for anyone who would like to contribute to this conversation.
A media release from the municipality explains that the agriculture and food sector is a major contributor to the economy in Mississippi Mills and surrounding region; however, a shortage of abattoirs and meat processing plants continues to have a negative effect on farmers and presents a considerable obstacle for local food retailers and restaurants in their efforts to access locally sourced meat.
In view of these concerns, Mississippi Mills has collaborated with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) to undertake an abattoir feasibility study. In early 2024 representatives engaged the services of Mallot Creek Group Inc, known to be one of the leading consulting firms in Canada specializing in food, agriculture, and related industries.
To date Mallot Creek Group has consulted with close to 100 local livestock producers from across the region.
“We thank the agricultural community for their enthusiastic participation,” the municipality stated in the release
A lunch presentation to hear findings and discuss next steps is planned for Monday, Aug. 12 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the John Levi Community Centre, 182 Bridge St. Almonte.
Representatives from the Mallot Creek Group will be on site to provide an overview of their findings, including analysis and recommendations for next steps.
Mallot Creek’s presentation will include a summary of data gathered through online survey and interviews along with their resulting analysis of current access to custom slaughter and meat processing across Mississippi Mills and the surrounding region. This analysis has led to a set of recommendations and next steps which they will share. Representatives will also be seeking input from livestock producers and other interested stakeholders to gauge your thoughts and feelings on a potential way forward.
Those wishing to attend are asked to RSVP by August 7 to bostrom@mississippimills.ca or 613-256-2064 ext. 603.
