Residents of Carleton Place and area are warned to be on guard against a fraudster.

The Lanark OPP say a male suspect has been going to homes in the Sarah Street area telling the residents that there is a lien on their property and that he is working with Service Ontario to remove that lien… if the homeowner pays an up-front fee. Police say the individual claims to be a lawyer with Service Ontario.

“The scammer even provides a realistic looking receipt that appears to be from the government agency,” police say, emphasizing that “this is a service scam.”

Police advise anyone who encounters this individual or anyone making such a claim, ask them to leave.

“When in doubt, contact Service Ontario directly,” police say.
