In the heart of Rideau Lakes, No. 9 Gardens is gearing up for its major fundraising event, the Seed-to-Table Harvest Meal, taking place on Sept. 28.

With off-grid yurts, fresh produce from the garden, and workshops on sustainable living, the festival offers a down-home way to celebrate the harvest season and connect with the land.

The Harvest Meal is a collaboration with Miss Bao of Kingston, a cocktail bar and restaurant, and Bobbi Pecorino’s Italian Wine Bar in Kingston, in a celebration of local food, sustainable agriculture, and community. The event will offer seed-to-table dining, with a beverage pairing, which will highlight the garden produce and gets underway at 4 p.m. with an hour-long eco-art tour, followed by cocktails in the garden from 5 to 6 p.m. The seven-course dinner will be served from 6 to 9 p.m. with three paired wines.

Funds will support the No. 9 Gardens’ food security education and donation programs with $150 of the $215 ticket fee (gratuity and taxes included) being tax deductible.

“We think this event will showcase what No. 9 Gardens has to offer,” says executive director Andrew Davies. “We also want to provide more seed-to-table dining opportunities.”

While on site guests will have the opportunity to learn from experts in sustainable living—all in a stunning natural setting.

COME INTO THE GARDENS

No. 9 Gardens is a public learning center focused on sustainable living. Founded in 2018 by Davies and his wife, Elizabeth Lenell Davies, the 40-acre site features organically cultivated gardens, renewable energy systems, and off-grid yurts.

No. 9 Gardens has donated over 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food banks and offers weekend programs on topics like renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and Indigenous knowledge. Donations of fresh organic produce are given to Kingston and area food banks, including Martha’s Table, The Kingston Food Bank, The Loving Spoonful, Tyendinaga Food Bank, St. Luke’s in Elgin, Queen’s AMS Food Bank, Kingston Community Health Centres and the Merrickville Rideau Community Health Services.

There are workshops on sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, and Indigenous knowledge, along with art installations that challenge traditional design concepts. Visitors can explore eco-friendly architecture, participate in seed-to-table events, and join retreats that offer hands-on experiences in sustainable living.
No. 9 Gardens is open to the public on weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open from the first weekend in June through to the end of September. It is located at 1516 Summers Rd., south of Elgin in Rideau Lakes Township.
