Police presence in Smiths Falls Oct. 10 related to underwater search

UPDATE: Police recover vehicle from Rideau River in Smiths Falls

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Smiths Falls Police Service have alerted the public that there will be police activity today in Smiths Falls.

In a joint statement, police say that members of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit will be searching the Rideau River at Lower Reach Park in Smiths Falls today (Thursday, Oct. 10).

“There is no threat to public safety,” police say.

The initiative is related to an ongoing investigation the forces are both involved in. When asked if it’s related to the two missing men from the area police are still searching for, the OPP’s media relations officer Bill Dickson told Lanarkist “Yes, this is part of the ongoing investigations in the Smiths Falls area.”

Dickson said police can provide no further information at this time.

Lanarkist will provide more information on this matter as it is made available.
