Mississippi Mills is mourning the loss of Dorothy Finner, former Mayor of the Town of Almonte, who passed away on Monday, May 5 in her 102nd year.

Mayor Christa Lowry issued a statement on Tuesday recognizing Finner’s decades of service and impact on the community. “Mrs. Finner was a pillar of the community and a political trailblazer,” said Lowry.

Finner served on Almonte Council from 1974 to 1978 and again from 1986 to 1988. In 1988, she became the first woman elected Mayor of Almonte, a role she held for three consecutive terms. After municipal amalgamation, she returned as Almonte Ward Councillor from 1998 to 2000.

“Among her many significant achievements, Mrs. Finner helped guide amalgamation in 1998, supported major infrastructure projects to allow for the future growth of Almonte and was a champion for seniors’ housing and group homes,” said Lowry.

In addition to her political work, Finner was deeply involved in the community. She served on the board of the Almonte General Hospital, helped found the Almonte Community Development Corporation (now Carebridge Community Support), and was an active member and volunteer with Holy Name of Mary Church.

“Mrs. Finner was a community ambassador, loving mother and dedicated volunteer,” Lowry said.

In honour of her contributions, flags at all municipal buildings have been lowered. Residents are encouraged to keep the Finner family in their thoughts during this time of remembrance.
