Carleton Place reminds resident to double-check property lines before building

As the weather warms up and residents begin thinking about home improvements, the Town of Carleton Place is reminding homeowners to double-check their property lines before breaking ground on construction or landscaping projects this spring.
Whether you’re installing a fence, planting trees, or building a new backyard shed, it’s important to make sure that the work stays within your own property and does not infringe on the municipal road allowance. This is a designated strip of land bordering roadways that the town manages for infrastructure and public safety.
The municipal road allowance includes infrastructure such as sidewalks, curbs, landscaped boulevards, fire hydrants, hydro poles, streetlights, signs, and community mailboxes. It also encompasses underground and surface-level utilities like water valves and utility pedestals.
Residents with corner lots are also encouraged to be mindful of “sight triangles”—clear areas near intersections that help ensure visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

“This ensures everyone’s safety and maintains clear sightlines for drivers and pedestrians,” town officials said in a release on Thursday, May 8.
Those who have questions or concerns about their property or development restrictions are encouraged to consult with municipal staff if they have questions before starting any project.
