Residents of Carleton Place are being encouraged to give unwanted items a second life as the town prepares to host its annual Freecycle Weekend from May 30 to June 1; the weekend represents a community-wide effort to reduce landfill waste and promote the reuse and re-homing of items.

The event, organized by the Carleton Place Environmental Advisory Committee, invites residents to place gently used but unwanted household items at the curb clearly marked with a “FREE” sign to distinguish from anything not intended for giveaway to avoid confusion.

Beginning on Friday morning, locals are encouraged to tour their neighbourhoods by foot or by car and pick up items they feel inspired to reuse or repurpose. Anything that remains unclaimed by 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 1 must be removed from curbs and returned into the owner’s property. The town confirmed they will not collect leftover items on the street or curbside.

“The goal is simple: keep usable items out of landfills while building a stronger sense of community,” the town said in a press release issued on Tuesday, May 21.

Organizers are also urging residents to be environmentally mindful during their treasure hunts. “Please do not allow vehicles to idle and pollute unnecessarily as you stop to look,” they noted in a statement.
