Carleton Place urges water conservation as lawn watering restrictions take effect

With summer temperatures on the rise, the Town of Carleton Place is reminding residents to keep their watering habits in check to help conserve water and maintain reserves for essential services over the summer months.

From May 1 to September 30, 2025 the town’s colour-coded Water Demand Status system will be in effect — a proactive measure designed to avoid the need for a full lawn watering ban during periods of high demand.

According to the town of Carleton Place, the system encourages residents to voluntarily limit water use, particularly when the water treatment plant is operating under pressure during hot or drought-like conditions.

Lawn and garden watering is allowed on an odd/even schedule, based on your house number:

  • Odd-numbered homes may water on odd calendar days
  • Even-numbered homes may water on even calendar days

Permitted watering times are:

  • May, June, August, and September:
    – Morning: 5 to 9 a.m.
    – Evening: 7 to 11 p.m.
  • July only:
    – Evening hours only, from 7 to 11 p.m.

“The aim is to avoid a complete watering ban by encouraging smart, responsible use of water now,” town officials said in a press release. “Every drop saved helps ensure there’s enough supply for emergencies.”

Residents who have recently installed new sod or landscaping can water daily during the designated hours for up to 21 consecutive days, but must first register with the Town’s By-law Department at 613-257-5688 or email bylaw@carletonplace.ca.
