The Town of Smiths Falls has entered into a formal twinning and cooperation agreement with the City of Zolochiv, located in the Lviv Oblast region of Ukraine.

Signed on June 16, 2025, the agreement outlines a commitment to dialogue and collaboration in areas such as education, sports, economic development, tourism, culture, historical architecture, and environmental protection. The partnership also aims to foster cultural exchange and civic engagement between the two communities, according to a media release from the town.

“This partnership is more than symbolic — it is a commitment to learning from one another, sharing our strengths, and promoting peace and cooperation across borders,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow. “We are humbled to walk alongside our Ukrainian partners in both support and friendship.”

The twinning initiative is designed to promote mutual understanding and solidarity, particularly as Ukraine continues to face challenges related to the ongoing conflict. Community-led cultural activities and youth engagement opportunities are expected to be part of the long-term collaboration.

“This agreement opens the door to new friendships, shared learning, and a deeper appreciation of each other’s histories and hopes,” added Mayor Pankow. “We are excited to grow together through this unique international connection.”

The town extended its thanks to the Ukrainian Embassy and local supporters who helped advance the partnership. Further information on related events and programs will be announced in the coming months.
