‘Hearts are broken’: Almonte mourns death of nine-year-old boy in school bus collision

A small town is grieving after a tragic collision in Almonte claimed the life of a nine-year-old boy on Wednesday, June 25.
Emergency crews were called to Paterson Street on Wednesday afternoon after a bicycle and a school bus collided near R. Tait McKenzie Public School. The young cyclist, later identified as Archer Lowe, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Ontario Provincial Police say the investigation is ongoing, with support from the OPP Collision Reconstructionist and Technical Collision Investigation Team.
Archer, who is remembered as a “vibrant kid who loved soccer and Pokémon,” lived in Mississippi Mills with his family. A GoFundMe campaign launched in the wake of the tragedy describes him as a child with “a big smile” who adored animals, especially his dog Moose, and dreamed of becoming a soccer player.
“Most of all, he loved his family,” the campaign reads. “This family needs our support during this absolutely unimaginable time.”

The GoFundMe organizer, Michelle Maguire, says the fundraiser will help cover funeral expenses, therapy and counselling, and provide financial relief so the family can take time to grieve. As of Thursday afternoon, donations had already begun to pour in from across the community, with $32,400 raised of a $45,000 goal as of about 9 a.m. on Thursday.
Local residents have been expressing their sorrow and support online, where tributes continue to appear beneath posts about the incident.
“Praying for all affected by this tragedy and loss,” Elizabeth Poulsen wrote on social media. She recalled meeting Archer when he played with her grandchildren. “Such a happy playful boy. Hearts are broken over this and for the bus driver also. May comfort and grace cover each one.”
Another local parent, Awais Mehmood, shared that his own child attends the same school. “This is heartbreaking… Words fall short in expressing this tremendous loss. This feels very personal. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Rest in peace, precious soul.”
The Upper Canada District School Board said support is being offered to students and staff affected by the tragedy.
