The Town of Carleton Place is urging residents to limit outdoor water use after moving into RED – LIMIT status under its new water demand notification system.

The alert, issued on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 comes as hot, dry weather has lead to more lawn and garden watering across the community, putting significant pressure on the municipal water system.

“When outdoor watering increases during hot spells, the demand on our water treatment plant rises sharply,” the Town said in a statement. “We’re asking residents to be mindful so that we can avoid a full ban on lawn watering.”

Under the RED – LIMIT designation, water use is considered very high and is currently exceeding the Town’s ability to produce enough treated drinking water. The Town is requesting that residents limit all outdoor water activities for the time being, including:

  • Lawn watering
  • Garden irrigation
  • Car washing
  • Filling pools or sprinklers

According to town officials, the goal of the new colour-coded Water Demand Status system is to help residents better understand the stress on the water supply and to encourage voluntary conservation.
