The Town of Carleton Place is asking residents to conserve water after demand at the municipal water treatment plant reached the “Yellow – Conserve” level this week.

The “Yellow-Conserve” status indicates that municipal usage is above normal levels but not yet at a critical stage and town officials are hopeful that residents will do their best to keep it that way.

Residents are encouraged to follow several water-saving tips during this time, including:

  • Watering early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation
  • Choosing drought-resistant plants and trees
  • Using mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce weeds
  • Avoiding watering driveways or other paved surfaces
  • Raising lawnmower blades to prevent grass from drying out
  • Collecting rainwater in barrels for use in gardens and planters

In a release on Friday, July 25, town officials are also reminding residents to abide by the seasonal lawn watering schedule, which will remain in effect until September 30. Homes with odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered calendar days, while even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered days.

Residents are permitted to water within the following months and hours:

  • May, June, August, and September: 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • July: Evenings only, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
