Bag tags no longer needed as Perth streamlines garbage collection

Residents in Perth will no longer need to place bag tags on their garbage after town council voted to simplify the collection program moving forward, according to a release from the township.

Starting this fall, each household will be allowed to put out two bags of garbage every other week without tags. That’s an increase from the previous system, which averaged about one-and-a-half bags every two weeks through annual tag allocation.

“By removing the need for residents to pick up annual tags at Town Hall, the new system provides a simpler, more consistent, and more convenient approach to garbage collection, ” the town said in a release.

Tags will still be required for any additional bags beyond the bi-weekly limit. Residents can use leftover tags they already have or purchase new ones at the Perth Town Hall.

By removing the need for residents to pick up annual tags, the town says the program will streamline the process for both the township and residents. “This change not only simplifies the process but also increases the level of service for residents. With a consistent two-bag allowance every other week, households now have more flexibility than under the previous tag system.”

The changes were approved at the Town Council meeting on August 26, 2025, where councillors also passed a motion to reduce the cost of bag tags from $3.30 to $2. That price change will take effect once the town’s Fees and Charges By-Law is formally amended.
