The Municipality of Mississippi Mills is notifying the public that they will be carrying out its annual water main flushing program in Almonte from Sept. 29 to Oct. 31.

The work, required under provincial legislation, will take place on weekdays only between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Crews will be hard at work flushing hydrants to clear built-up sediment from the system, keeping the water clean and safe.

According to a release from the municipality, residents may notice temporary drops in water pressure during this time. Tap water may also appear reddish or discoloured and it is advised that residents not to drink or do laundry with discoloured water.

If water appears red, residents are encouraged to turn off their taps for 20 to 30 minutes while water main flushing is underway. Once crews have moved on, running a cold water tap for a few minutes will help clear the system.

Those living in affected areas may want to fill containers with clean water each morning for drinking and cooking throughout the day. Questions about the program can be directed to the Water and Sewer Department at 613-256-2064.
