Expectant parents at Almonte General Hospital (AGH) now have a new way to stay on their feet during labour. A first-of-its-kind program for the hospital, the Walking Epidural program aims to give birthing patients more freedom of movement — and more control — when preparing to welcome their babies into the world.

The Mississippi River Health Alliance (MRHA) announced the launch of the program on Tuesday, Oct. 7, marking a key milestone for the hospital’s growing Obstetrics Department. This new option allows labouring patients who choose epidural pain relief to remain mobile during labour, a practice that is shown to improve comfort and outcomes for both parent and baby.

According to a release from the MRHA, walking epidurals, used in hospitals around the world, are associated with lower rates of medical intervention and more positive birthing experiences. “This practice change has been in the works for a number of years, and we are delighted to bring it to our community,” said Dr. Bahaa Awwad, Chief of the Obstetrics Department in a release. “Our commitment is to ensure that every family feels confident, supported and cared for throughout their birth experience.”

Dr. Melanie Fortune, Chief of Staff at AGH, said the launch of this new program reflects a team-based commitment to advancing patient-centred care in their facility. “This program gives families more options, close to home, delivered by our dedicated obstetricians, anaesthetists, family physicians, midwives and nurses,” Fortune shared.
