A 450-ton crane will hoist Smiths Falls’ new timber Confederation bridge onto its abutments Tuesday as work continues on the landmark project.

The town says in a media release that work will begin at about 11 a.m. Residents are welcome to watch from outside the construction fencing.

“This is an exciting milestone for Smiths Falls,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow in statement. “The new timber bridge will not only serve as important infrastructure but also as a beautiful landmark that reflects our community’s pride, craftsmanship, and connection to the natural environment.”

The bridge will be hoisted in sections to meet weight and safety limits. Once in place, work will continue through the next month, including installation of the wood deck panels, the steel roof system, electrical lighting, field stone caps for the concrete pedestals, and final landscaping.

The town expects the project to be completed in November.
