The Westport Library is receiving provincial support through the Ontario government’s $660,000 Internet Connectivity Grant program, which funds free and reliable internet access at First Nations and rural public libraries.

“I’m so pleased that Westport is benefiting from this investment by our government,” said Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes in a statement. “In rural communities like Westport, libraries are more than just books. They’re places where people of all ages connect, learn new skills, explore opportunities, and access essential services online.”

The province has increased program funding by $78,000 this year, allowing 30 more public libraries to join. As a result, all First Nations public libraries and four additional rural libraries will have their public internet access costs fully reimbursed.

“Public libraries are a vital hub in any community that connects people to learning, culture and one another,” said Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming in a statement. “This increased funding will ensure dependable access to essential digital tools and resources in communities across the province. By supporting public libraries, we are protecting community spaces that empower people of all ages to learn and develop the skills they need to succeed.”

The province says libraries continue to play a key role in helping residents access tutoring, job training, language supports and online services. A 2023–24 technology services report from Toronto Public Library found that nearly one-third of northern Ontarians without home internet rely on public libraries for online access.

Since 2018, the program has provided more than $4.3 million to public libraries across the province.
