‘Sherlock Ohms’ hits the ice as Smiths Falls replaces propane-powered Zamboni

Smiths Falls has introduced its first fully electric ice resurfacer, replacing an aging propane model at the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre. The Engo Ice Wolf, nicknamed “Sherlock Ohms” by arena staff, is expected to reduce emissions, improve air quality inside the facility, and lower operating costs over time.
The electric unit will eliminate an estimated nine to 10 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year, the equivalent of burning more than 4,000 litres of propane. It will also offer a quieter, fume-free environment for skaters and spectators.
“Our team is very pleased to introduce Sherlock Ohms to the community,” said Stephanie Clark, Director of Community Services. “This isn’t just about upgrading equipment, it’s about leading by example. Every step we take to reduce our carbon footprint, improve safety for staff, and enhance the experience for our residents adds up to meaningful progress.”
The Engo Ice Wolf includes a quick-change blade system, automated auger cleaning and a fully electric drivetrain. Staff are now training on the machine as it prepares for its first season on the ice.
Clark said the purchase supports the town’s broader sustainability goals and reflects a commitment to modern, environmentally responsible operations. Residents will see the new resurfacer in use throughout the 2025 ice season.
