The Town of Perth and Enbridge Gas Ontario are teaming up to make homes safer and reduce fire and carbon monoxide-related deaths to zero.

Safe Community Project Zero is a province-wide public education campaign led by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council (FMPFSC). The initiative will be providing more than 14,200 alarms to residents in 75 communities across Ontario this year.

Enbridge Gas has invested $450,000 in the 2025 campaign and has contributed over 115,000 alarms to Ontario fire departments over the past 17 years. Perth Fire Services has received 126 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to distribute to local households in need.

According to a release from the Town of Perth, the alarms help protect residents by providing early warning in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide leak, offering critical time to escape safely. “Carbon monoxide alarms play a vital role as a second line of defence against this invisible threat, often called ‘the silent killer,’” explained Chris Brennan, Senior Advisor, Municipal and Stakeholder Affairs at Enbridge Gas. “Proper maintenance of fuel-burning appliances is the most effective way to prevent carbon monoxide exposure.”

Jon Pegg, Ontario’s Fire Marshal and Chair of the FMPFSC, emphasized the program’s dual benefits of education and prevention. “The objective of Safe Community Project Zero is to deliver these alarms to areas where they are needed most,” he shared.

Perth Fire Chief Trevor Choffe said the department is committed to ensuring that every resident is protected. “We are incredibly grateful to receive this grant, which allows us to distribute smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to households in need,” Choffe said. “It’s a powerful step forward in our ongoing mission to prevent fire-related tragedies and serve our community with care and dedication.”
