United Way East Ontario sets $150,000 Giving Tuesday goal as need rises across region

United Way East Ontario is aiming to raise $150,000 by the end of Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2 as more residents turn to social services heading into the holiday season.
Each dollar donated will be matched by TD, according to a media release from the United Way.
The organization says rising housing pressures, opioid addictions and widening economic disparity are driving more people to seek help across Renfrew County, Lanark County, Ottawa and Prescott-Russell. United Way partners with local agencies, governments, people with lived experience, donors and volunteers to respond to those needs.
Through research and consultation, the organization identifies priority areas and directs funding where it believes it will have the greatest effect. United Way says its approach is based on long-standing work in the region and a focus on measurable results.
“We know that for a community to be great, it must be great for everyone. But we can’t do this work alone. Overcoming our biggest challenges depends on the dedication and generosity of people across our region,” said Mark Taylor, Vice President, Resource Development, United Way East Ontario in a statement.
Giving Tuesday is a global movement encouraging charitable giving and volunteerism. United Way says the day offers a timely chance for people to support local initiatives and help neighbours in need.
