Members of the Royal Canadian Legion in Perth, along with their friends and family, are preparing to once again jump boldly into the new year. Plans are taking shape for the annual Perth Polar Bear Plunge on January 1, 2026 as the popular New Year’s Day event, hosted by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 244 Perth-Upon-Tay, will celebrate more than three decades of plunges in support of community causes.

After 31 years of fundraising for local organizations, the Legion itself is now the beneficiary, with proceeds earmarked for accessibility upgrades at the Legion hall and enhancements to their veterans’ programs.

Among those confirmed to take the plunge next year are event host and Armed Forces veteran David Lavery, known as “Canadian Dave,” along with Legion president Ivan Cole.

“The Plunge is a great tradition to start off the New Year,” Cole said in a online statement. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone January 1st and appreciate the community’s support to keep your Legion running smoothly.”

Fundraising officially kicked off this week, with Cole reporting $1,275 already raised toward the Legion’s $50,000 goal. Residents can register to plunge, sponsor a participant or make a donation through the event’s online fundraising page. Pledge sheets are also available at the Legion office on Beckwith Street or at the Perth Museum and Visitor Information Centre at 11 Gore St. East.

The Legion is encouraging community members to get involved by spreading the word, volunteering on the day of the event or supporting plungers through sponsorships. “There will be many tasks on January 1st and everyone is invited to participate,” Cole shared.

Additional event details are expected to be released in the coming weeks. More information is available through the Legion’s Facebook page or by contacting the Legion office directly.
