Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital has declared an internal Code Orange due to high patient volumes and staffing concerns.

The hospital issued the notice on the evening of Monday, Dec. 29, citing a surge in emergency department visits, a high number of patients requiring admission, and staffing pressures.

In a social media post, hospital officials say teams continue to monitor the situation, with staff already on site supporting patient care and redeployment plans in place to maintain essential services.

“Patient safety and care remain the top priority,” the post reads. “As a reminder, the PSFDH Emergency Team assesses every individual and prioritizes care for the sickest patients first. As a result, some ER patients may experience longer wait times.”

The post explained that emergency department patients are assessed on arrival and treated based on the severity of their condition. As a result, some patients may experience longer wait times.

Anyone requiring immediate medical assistance is urged to call 911. Paramedics will assess patients and transport them to the nearest emergency department if needed.

Residents with minor illnesses or injuries are encouraged to consider other care options, including contacting their primary care provider, using Health811 online or by calling 811, visiting the East Region Virtual Care Clinic, or speaking with a local pharmacist.

“The PSFDH Team thanks the community for their support and understanding,” the post concluded.
