Ontario Provincial Police will maintain a presence at a residential property in Montague Township near Smiths Falls as part of an ongoing homicide investigation, though active search efforts at the site will pause until spring, police say in a Friday, Jan. 16 media release.

On Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, officers executing a search warrant at a residence on Kelly Jordan Road located the remains of Robbie Thomson. The Smiths Falls resident was 34 years old when he was reported missing in October 2023.

Police say three people charged with first-degree murder in connection with the investigation remain in custody. Charged are Christopher Fenton, 48, of Montague Township; Erin Mackie, 40, of Montague Township and Joshua Belfiori, 34, of Kingston. Charges have not been proven in court.

Investigators say frozen ground conditions have made it difficult to continue a detailed search of the 40-acre property. While on-site search activity is being paused, police say the investigation remains active and officers will continue to pursue new leads or information as it becomes available.

The investigation is being led by Lanark County OPP, in collaboration with the Smiths Falls Police Service, under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch. The Office of the Chief Coroner, the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service and OPP Forensic Identification Services are also assisting.

Residents along Kelly Jordan Road can expect to see a continued police presence at the property throughout the winter, with measures in place to monitor the site.
