The Town of Perth is inviting residents to explore conceptual ideas for the future of the Tay Basin during a public exhibition on Friday, April 10.

The showcase, scheduled for Crystal Palace (31 Basin Lane) from 7 to 9 p.m. on April 10, will feature student design proposals developed through a partnership with the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.

The concepts reimagine the Tay Basin as a flexible and accessible public space, with a focus on community use, tourism and pedestrian movement.

Local architect Adam Mackenzie Smith is coordinating the competition, with the Town participating as a community partner.

“These ideas offer a unique opportunity to explore what the Tay Basin could become,” said Cathy McNally, director of community services in a Tuesday, March 31 media release.

“While the designs are conceptual, they help spark important conversations about how we use and experience public spaces in Perth.”

The proposals also consider how existing features, including the Crystal Palace and Rideau Trail, could be incorporated into future planning.

The Town notes in the release that the designs are exploratory and do not commit the municipality to any future projects or funding.

Residents are encouraged to attend the Tay Basin Landscape Ideas Competition Showcase to view the submissions and provide feedback.
