A new musical tradition is set to take shape in Carleton Place, where the sound of bagpipes will echo through Veterans Memorial Park as a tribute to a century of service by the Royal Canadian Legion.

As the Legion marks its 100th anniversary in 2026, communities across the country are finding meaningful ways to honour its longstanding legacy. Locally, a partnership between the MacEóin-Ramsay Pipe Band and the Captain A. Roy Brown Legion Branch 192 is bringing this celebration to life through a series of weekly outdoor performances.

Under the leadership of band manager Neil MacLeod, members of the pipe band have worked closely with the Legion’s Cenotaph Committee to plan this unique summer series.

Dubbed “The Pipes Are Calling,” the initiative will see the pipe band perform every Friday evening from June 26 through Sept. 4 , 2026 at the Carleton Place Cenotaph in Veterans Memorial Park. According to a release from the Town Carleton Place, each performance will begin at 6 p.m., with musicians marching in and playing for approximately 30 minutes or longer, depending on attendance.

“There may be a solo piper or a mini-band performing at the Cenotaph, or anything in-between, but there will be bagpipes rain or shine,” said town officials.

The collaboration builds upon an already strong relationship between the pipe band and Branch 192, with the band playing a prominent role in local Remembrance Day ceremonies, including leading the annual Nov. 11 parade.

“Many communities across Ontario have adopted the tradition of a sunset piper, and these concerts have become a favourite with both locals and tourists. We hope that this will help to cement the tradition here in Carleton Place as well,” said the release.

Further information and details will be shared on the Legion’s social media channels closer to the launch date.
