Smiths Falls police charge foster parents with aggravated assault against infant

A months-long investigation involving police, child protection agencies and medical professionals has led to charges against two foster parents in Smiths Falls.
Deputy Police Chief Chris Kettyle told Lanarkist that the investigation began in mid-February of this year, when the victim was 14 months old.
Child and Family Services (CFS) from Smiths Falls and Ottawa, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Smiths Falls Police Service Criminal Investigations Branch all aided in the investigation. Kettyle explained that the coordinated and collaborative approach between all agencies aimed to “ensure the child’s safety and to bring the investigative results before the courts.”
The two foster parents, both from Smiths Falls, have been arrested and charged with one count each of aggravated assault due to the nature of injuries that the child presented with.
Kettyle said the investigation has not determined any previous similar incidents.
“The child has been removed from the residence and remains under the care of the CFS,” he continued, noting that he is not at liberty to disclose any further details.
Kettlye said the Smiths Falls Police Service is committed to preventing harm to the community’s most vulnerable residents.
“This includes managing complex and sensitive investigations involving infants and children when injuries occur. Such cases require significant resources and focused attention from our officers.”
