Jewelry theft in Carleton Place prompts police warning about distraction scams

Lanark County OPP are warning residents about distraction thefts following recent incidents in Carleton Place.
Police say on Sunday, April 26, 2026, a senior was approached by a woman who asked her to try on a bracelet. During the interaction, the suspect allegedly removed the victim’s necklace without her noticing.
A short time later, a second woman was approached in another area of town using a similar tactic, though nothing was taken.
Police are reminding the public of common distraction theft tactics:
Common Distraction Theft Tactics
- Physical contact: Hugging, shaking hands, or forcing jewelry onto a victim to steal their real items.
- Fake jewelry scam: Offering “free” costume jewelry while removing the victim’s real valuables.
- Distress/help: Pretending to be lost, asking for directions, or asking for money.
- Staged disturbance: Spilling food/drink on a victim, dropping money, or starting an argument.
- Vehicular tactics: Claiming the victim damaged their car or asking questions from a vehicle.
Officers are also offering tips to help residents protect themselves:
How to Protect Yourself
- Remain aware: Stay vigilant in crowded places, parking lots, and near bank machines.
- Secure valuables: Keep purses zipped and jewelry concealed while in public.
- Maintain personal space: Do not allow strangers into your personal space; if they are close enough to touch your necklace, they are too close.
- Be wary of strangers: Exercise caution when approached by someone overly friendly, engaging, or distressed.
- Report incidents: Contact local police if you become a victim or see suspicious activity.
