Ontario Premier Doug Ford visited Smiths Falls on Friday, May 8, to announce more than $13 million in provincial funding for local water and wastewater infrastructure upgrades.

Ford, joined by provincial representatives, toured the town’s water treatment plant as the province confirmed Smiths Falls will receive $13,306,867 through Ontario’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program – Health and Safety Water Stream.

The funding will support the town’s trunk watermain upgrade and sewer separation project, aimed at improving water system reliability for about 1,380 existing homes while preparing the community for future growth.

The Town said in a media release that the project will modernize critical infrastructure, improve system performance and help support future residential and economic development.

Mayor Shawn Pankow thanked the province for the investment, calling it an important step for the community’s future.

“On behalf of the Town of Smiths Falls, I would like to thank the Government of Ontario for this significant investment in our community,” Pankow stated.

“This funding will allow us to move forward with critical infrastructure upgrades that will improve the reliability and capacity of our water and wastewater systems while supporting the continued growth of Smiths Falls for years to come.”

Andrew MacNaughton, the town’s manager of water and wastewater services, said the project will help maintain and improve essential municipal services.

“We appreciate the Premier’s visit to our state-of-the-art facility, as well as the support of MPP John Jordan and the Government of Ontario,” MacNaughton said.

“Their recognition of this critical work helps ensure we can continue maintaining and improving essential water and wastewater services for residents across Smiths Falls.”

The province said the investment is part of its broader efforts to strengthen municipal infrastructure and support long-term growth across Ontario communities.
