The Town of Smiths Falls will officially open its new pedestrian and cyclist bridge with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 22 at 11 a.m.

Residents and community members are invited to attend the event and be among the first to experience the completed structure.

The new timber bridge, which has yet to be named, is expected to serve as a new landmark in the downtown core, improving pedestrian connectivity and creating additional public space for residents and visitors.

Constructed using mass timber elements and modern building methods, the project highlights the Town’s focus on sustainable infrastructure using renewable materials.

The project received partial funding from Natural Resources Canada through the Green Construction Through Wood program, which supports the use of advanced wood-based building products and construction techniques.

“The new pedestrian bridge will connect Smiths Falls, creating a more accessible community for local residents, built with sustainable, Canadian materials,” said Carleton MP Bruce Fanjoy in a media release. “Through the Buy Canadian Policy and the GCWood program, our government is investing in new community infrastructure that prioritizes Canadian materials, creates jobs, and increases accessibility across the country.”

Mayor Shawn Pankow noted that the project has been “an exciting journey from start to finish,” and said the Town is proud to officially unveil the completed bridge.

“Council wanted to provide our citizens and visitors with a unique opportunity to enjoy the historic Rideau Canal, and StruftureCraft delivered. The bridge is more than just a pedestrian crossing – it is a symbol of innovation and community pride that residents and visitors will enjoy for years to come.”

Residents are encouraged to attend the ceremony and celebrate the opening of this new community asset.
