Residents of Smiths Falls will get another chance to enjoy a fireworks display after some confusion surrounding the town’s Canada Day celebration.

In a Tuesday, July 7 media release, the Town of Smiths Falls says it has resolved discussions with the fireworks provider following the July 1 incident, when the planned display went ahead despite being officially cancelled because of severe weather.

Town officials had announced the fireworks would not proceed due to safety concerns, citing severe weather and the need to protect residents, visitors, staff, volunteers and emergency responders.

However, the fireworks were unexpectedly launched after the cancellation was announced, leaving many residents confused and disappointed.

Following discussions with the town, the fireworks provider has apologized for the incident and agreed to provide a replacement display at no additional cost, the media release explains.

“The decision to cancel the fireworks display was made with public safety as our foremost concern,” Mayor Shawn Pankow said.

“While the events that followed were not what anyone anticipated, I am pleased that through constructive discussions we have reached a positive resolution for our community. We appreciate the provider’s commitment to making things right and look forward to giving residents the opportunity to enjoy the celebration they were expecting.”

The town says it’s now working to schedule a new date for the replacement fireworks display.

More information will be shared once arrangements have been finalized.
