The Town of Perth has officially proclaimed Sept. 10, 2026, as John Andrew Hope Day, recognizing a legacy of military service, public leadership and contributions to health care and the justice systems.

According to an announcement issued by the Town of Perth on Thursday, Sept. 3, Mayor Judy Brown issued the proclamation on behalf of council to coincide with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by the Ontario Heritage Trust on Sept. 10, celebrating the life and accomplishments of the Perth native and WWI veteran.

As previously reported, Hope began his legal career in Perth before serving in the First World War, where he was wounded twice while serving overseas.

After returning home, he resumed his legal career while dedicating himself to public service. Among his lasting local contributions was his role as a founding figure in the Great War Memorial Hospital, now known as the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, where his plaque will soon reside.

Hope went on to build a distinguished legal career, serving as a judge before being appointed to the Court of Appeal as well as leading a Royal Commission.

The mayor said it is fitting for the town to formally recognize Hope’s achievements and ensure future generations understand the significant role he played in local history, describing him as “a true son of Perth whose contributions continue to shape our community.”
