Elgin’s Crosby Cookhouse to remain closed for season following ‘devastating’ fire

A popular Elgin roadside restaurant will remain closed for the rest of the season following a devastating overnight fire that caused extensive damage to the business.

Crosby Cookhouse, located at 9 Narrows Lock Rd. in Elgin, took on social media on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026 to share the sad news of a ‘devastating’ blaze, which occurred overnight Tuesday, Sept. 8, into Wednesday, Sept. 9.

“With incredible shock and sadness we’re announcing that we will be closed for the rest of the season,” the business explained. “The cause is still under investigation, but the damage is extensive.”

Despite the loss, the restaurant expressed gratitude to its customers and supporters for helping make the summer season a successful one.

“We wish to thank all our loyal customers and friends for what has been a great season, despite all the challenges and disruption of the roundabout construction,” the restaurant stated.

In terms of next steps, the business said they are “obviously in shock” and are still processing the damage. “At this stage in the season we know realistically we won’t be able to reopen this year,” they noted.

No information about injuries or the extent of the financial loss was included in the restaurant’s statement. Both Crosby Cookhouse and the Rideau Lakes Fire Department have been contacted for additional information, but did not provide a comment by the time of publication.
