Mississippi Mills Council approved two major subdivision agreements earlier this week that will bring hundreds of new homes to the municipality, while also supporting a regional call for provincial action on tick-borne diseases.

At their regular meeting on the evening of Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Mississippi Mills Council approved subdivision agreements for the first phases of the Hannan Hills and Brown Lands developments. According to a release provided by the municipality on Wednesday, Sept. 16, Phase 1 of the Hannan Hills development will include 110 residential units, while Phase 1 of the Brown Lands subdivision is aiming for 235 units.

Council heard that preparation work has already begun for Hannan Hills, and municipal staff said work on the Brown Lands site could begin before the end of the year.

Council also received a planning report regarding a proposed zoning bylaw amendment for a property at 155 Ryan Duncan Sideroad. According to municipal officials, the amendment would change the zoning category from rural commercial to agricultural.

Residents were advised they have until Sept. 29 to submit their comments to the planning department, with the bylaw expected to return to council for final approval on Oct. 6.

Moving on to another matter, council endorsed a resolution from the Township of Lanark Highlands calling on the province to provide financial support and coordinate efforts to address and combat the growing issue of tick-borne diseases. With council’s support, a letter of support representing Lanark Highlands will now be sent to provincial ministers.

As the sole shareholder, Mississippi Mills also indicated its intention to reappoint three members of the Mississippi River Power Corporation (MRPC) board at the corporation’s 2027 annual general meeting. Council shared they plan to reappoint Lance Jeffries to a second term, and David Goldsmith and Patrick McNeil to third terms.

The Committee of the Whole section of the agenda brought forward several items that will return to council at a future meeting, including proposed 2027 municipal fees and charges, the appointment of KPMG as municipal auditors for 2026 and 2027, and subdivision agreements for the Hilan Village and Mill Run developments.

When speaking to the public, council also highlighted several upcoming community events, including the Carleton Place and District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards of Excellence on Oct. 15, Lanark Transportation’s 25th anniversary celebration on Sept. 24, and the Lanark County tree seedling giveaway on Sept. 19 at the Lanark County Public Works Garage on County Road 29.

Municipal officials also reminded residents that there will be a break in regular council meetings in October due to the municipal election. Mississippi Mills’ next hybrid council meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6 at 6 p.m., followed by Committee of the Whole.
