The Town of Carleton Place marked National Tree Day by planting a new red maple at McNeely Park on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026.

The Town’s Urban Forest/River Corridor Committee, Mayor Toby Randell, and members of town council and staff gathered at the park to plant an October Glory Red Maple to mark the annual celebration.

According to a release from the Town of Carleton Place, National Tree Day gives Canadians an opportunity to celebrate trees, connect with nature and take action on climate change. This year’s theme was “Forest Pathways: Innovation and Sustainability.”

In a social media post shared after the event, Carleton Place Mayor Toby Randell said the annual planting has become an opportunity for the community to recognize the importance of the town’s tree canopy.

“This year, as we do every year, we give it a name. Meet Gloria,” Randell said, referring to the new tree.

The mayor noted that the town has taken steps to support expanding its tree canopy through its Bare Root Tree Program, which has been operating since 1998. The program allows residents to register each spring to receive a tree, select from available species and participate in a planting workshop.

“I am proud to be part of a council that truly sees the benefits of our tree canopy and backs it up with legislation to ensure its future,” Randell emphasized.
