UPDATE: Police release name of suspect in Carleton Place suspicious fires

A 28-year-old Carleton Place resident is facing a number of arson and mischief-related charges in connection with five suspicious fires that were reported in town between Oct. 5 and Oct. 7.

The Lanark County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), with the assistance of the Lanark County Crime Unit, East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), OPP Canine and East Region Forensic Identification Services (FIS) are investigating this case.

Police say that on Thursday, Oct. 5, two suspicious fires were reported to the Lanark County OPP. Another suspicious fire was reported in the early morning hours of Oct. 6. Two more suspicious fires were reported on Oct. 7.

Kyle Spears, 28, of the Town of Carleton Place, has been charged with the following offences as a result of this investigation:

–      Arson – Damage to Property           three counts

–      Arson – Disregard for human life    two counts

–      Mischief endangering life                two counts

–      Mischief Over $5000

–      Mischief Under $5000                   two counts

–      Public Mischief                              two counts

–      Fail to comply with probation order

Charges have not been proven in court.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

Ongoing investigations are being conducted in relation to all fires.
