Suspicious package at Smiths Falls library prompts evacuation of area

An area of downtown Smiths Falls was evacuated on Saturday for a suspicious package investigation.

Smiths Falls police were called to the Russell Street East branch of the Smiths Falls Library on Saturday, Nov. 23 at about 2:30 p.m. regarding a report of a suspicious package that was located on the library’s steps.

Local police, along with the OPP Explosive Disposal Unit, successfully removed the device, which was eventually determined to be a discarded merchandise security alarm.

Areas of evacuation were re-opened later on Saturday.
