Fire at 19 Lanark Street in Smith Falls amounts to a ‘total loss’

Residents living in the area of Lanark Street in Smith Falls were likely awoken around midnight by blaring sirens and bright emergency lights on Sunday night.  A fire at 19/21 Lanark Street, a conjoined residential unit, broke out unexpectedly at the rear of the building and quickly made its way inside the building.

Smith Falls Fire Department Rick Chesebrough told Brockvilleist that the emergency call came in at about eight minutes to midnight on March 9, 2025. “We received the call and they arrived on scene, there were heavy flames. From the rear of the building that had worked its way into the building and up on the second floor and into the attic.”

While the building was insured, it is considered a total loss. Thankfully, there were no injuries and everybody inside both sides of the unit was able to evacuate safely.

Chief Chesebrough told Brockvilleist that the pair of tenants on one side of the building confirmed that they do not have tenants insurance. The exact cause of the fire is still known and the case is currently under investigation by an insurance company
